Many people suffer from acute or chronic sinusitis or as they are usually called - sinus infections. You don't need to suffer anymore; you can get sinus relief with natural home remedies without resorting to surgery.
Sinusitis is an advanced sinus infection, usually beginning with the post-nasal drip from sniffing during cold season, when weather changes, or during allergy attacks. The head has four nasal cavities which, if blocked by inflammation or mucous, will breed bacterial growth and eventual sinus infection and sinusitis.
Sinusitis can occur from any one or more of these conditions: the small hairs (called cilia) in the sinuses, which help move the mucus out, are not working properly; the very small openings (called ostia) from the sinuses to the nose become blocked; or too much mucus is produced.
Sinusitis can be caused by bacteria, viruses or fungi. When they get infected it's called a sinus infection. Sometimes sinus infections occur after you've had a cold as a complication.
A common symptom that is usually but not always present if you have a sinus infection is yellowish mucous or phlegm. While green and clear mucous can be signs of other types of infections or problems, usually yellow mucous or sputum means the sinuses are infected.
In the past sinus infections were treated with antibiotics which were prescribed for 7- 10 days in an attempt to reach the sinuses, however they are usually not prescribed anymore because it's an established fact that most sinus infections are caused by fungi or viruses.
Individuals with other health problems often do not realize that they have a sinus problem eat hand. For example, those with upper respiratory conditions such as asthma, a weakened immune system and other conditions such as diabetes.
The inflammation from a cold causes the mucous membranes that line the sinus cavities, to swell. Air and mucous become backed up because the passage is now too narrow for the mucous to pass through.
Usually the simple sinusitis treatment is to use a natural antibiotic for sinus infection that is proven to work. Otherwise antihistamines are generally best used in the case of allergies, and do not tend to work as well in treating colds and sinus infections.
Medical treatment usually prescribed the two main forms of treatment that are used, nasal steroid sprays and long courses of oral antibiotics, alone or in combination, have not been rigorously tested in chronic sinusitis.
Types of Sinuses:
Paranasal Sinus Dural Venous Sinus Coronary Sinus
Sinuses are simply hollow air spaces in the body. There are about 60 sinuses throughout the human body, but when you talk about the pain and symptoms of a "sinus attack", you are referring to the four pairs of sinuses known as the paranasal sinuses.
The symptoms of a chronic sinus infection are almost similar to those of an acute infection, except that the symptoms tend to last longer and do not respond to treatments as easily. It is also unusual to run a fever with a chronic sinus infection, although many people do with the acute variety of infection.
There are many over-the-counter decongestions and pain killers available to provide relief from sinus infections.
